Key Business Challenges
Tata Play has been working on a transformation journey since 2015 and wanted to explore and learn new ideas from group companies which could be potentially relevant to its business operations.
Expectations from the Engagement
To assist Tata Play and other Tata companies in their improvement endeavours, Tata Business Excellence Group (TBExG) organised a learning visit at Tata Motors' spare parts warehouse. The goal was to understand best practices followed by Tata Motors in different aspects pertaining to warehousing.
Engagement Approach
The visit took place at Tata Motors' spare parts warehouse in Chakan, Pune, on July 13, 2022, with 58 participants from 25 Tata companies actively involved. It was a collaborative effort between the Group Safety & Health team and the Best Practices team. During the visit, Tata Motors shared insights on regulatory compliance, fire prevention, electrical safety, and material handling practices.
Outputs and Insights from the Programme
After the visit, Tata Play implemented several key learnings from Tata Motors:
Dense Racking: Tata Play restructured its storage layout to incorporate dense racking, maximising storage capacity while reducing the overall warehouse space by 43% (from 6.31 Lac to 3.60 Lac sq. ft.) and cost by 23%.
Material Handling Equipment (MHE): Modern MHE was adopted to streamline material movement, reducing loading and unloading times by 40% for faster order fulfilment.
Wheelchair Accessibility: Inspired by inclusive practices at Tata Motors, Tata Play made its warehouse wheelchair-friendly, ensuring accessibility for all.
Lashing Belts: Lashing belts were incorporated to secure heavy items during storage, preventing accidents and product damage.
EDGE Impact stories highlight the positive transformations accomplished by Tata companies in their business processes through interventions such as deep dive diagnostics and best practice implementations, in collaboration with Tata Business Excellence Group (TBExG).
